I've gone to this salon for years but my relationship ended today after getting a phone call from one of the top male stylists saying he would not be able to do my hair today because of it's texture. This call was made shortly after booking the appointment which gave me enough time to rebook with Designer's Denn before a major presentation later this afternoon, however, it left me unsettled because I was essentially told I wouldn't be able to have my hair done because of its texture. Keep in mind stylists with a lot less experience than this particular stylist have done my hair in an hour. When I brought this point up, he reccomended I see one of them instead of him. I sense he essentially did not want to do my hair and was trying to pawn me off on someone else. This truly hurt my feelings because I've known this stylist for a long time and couldn't believe I was being refused a service for an issue related to color.
My experience with Julie Gorsuch at Viva was wonderful! She is very talented and works with you to give you exactly what you want! I have received several compliments about her work and would recommend anyone to go to her!
As for the rest of the stylists, atmosphere and products they use, I would say the place is decent. Julie is an incredible stylist and she is very young in her career. Christina is also great and very warm and professional. Nonetheless, I can't justify what I was told today, especially from a Master Stylist who has been doing hair for at least 20 years.
I have been going here for a few months now, and I will continue going there in the future. The place is really nice and welcoming, as is the receptionists. I can't speak for most of the hair stylists, but my stylist, Julie, is great! She cuts my hair the way I like, and even highlighted it once, doing a great job. The prices are average for a higher quality State College salon, but they have a cool recommendation deal where you can get almost a free haircut. The only downside is that it was a little bit hard to find the first time! Still highly recommend though!
I love the service! I usually go to Julie who has become not only my go-to hair dresser, but also a friend. Everyone is beyond friendly and i receive such a warm welcome as soon as i walk in the door. All their stylists are very professional and they do a phenomenal job. When I’m there i always look around the room and each client is always so pleased with their hair and makeup!! 10/10 recommend for anyone who needs a hair salon up in college! This is a perfect place for college girls with a budget. It’s very affordable and they’re very lenient with times and availability!
I was born in Happy Valley and grew up here. I find it very disconcerting that I'm judged by the color of my skin, regarding my hair texture.
I have never had a perm or relaxer treatment on my hair and don't have to do a lot in terms of achieving a blowout. There are stylists at the Salon, including Julie, who can blow out my hair in an hour flat and I just found the comments to be demeaning and insulting. Women with "different" hair textures, whatever that means like getting their hair done too and it just hurts when you think you get comfortable at a place and are told this.
I have been here twice now. Once for a blow out and once for a color and a blow out. Both times my blow out was less than satisfactory. I paid extra for my color treatment to get my hair blown out after. I made it clear both times I had special occasions to attend and that’s why I was getting a blow out. My hair is medium length and medium thickness nothing special or difficult. I had two different stylist who both gave me the same blowout. I have been to other salons in my hometown who do a beautiful job blowing out my hair. Overall the staff is nice and the salon is clean.
