Always have had an excellent experience at the Tavern. Food always yummy, portions generous, atmosphere historic Penn State. Been a fan for 30 years. Not today though. Our server kind of ruined our experience. She seemed like she was in a bad mood. We had brunch buffet, however, we waited an inordinate amount of time for beverages, dessert, coffee and even spoons. It was not crowded. I hate to complain but the truth is she was horrible. They flat out told us they were running out of food. Dessert portions were extremely small. Our reservations were at 12:30. Normally I would give this restaurant a 5 but this day a 2.
We arrived at The Tavern for lunch on Saturday and we were seated right away. Then things went down hill fast! Our server Luke looks like he just rolled out of bed. Our drinks from the bar took over 15 minutes. Lemon drop martini was served with no garnish, the beer on tap were not available as keg kicked at opening. We had to ask for a different beer rather than suggested a comparable beer. Food was ordered immediately after receiving our drinks at the same time as the table next to us. Our food took about 30-45 minutes. When the food finally showed up we received 3 out of 4 of our entree sandwiches. 3 well done burgers came to the table but a could cut turkey sandwich was not ready. We ordered dessert and but they were out. Service was mediocre at best and seemed as though they were not prepared for a game day weekend.
SO SO SO shocked by the positive reviews... maybe it's better when you're here for a normal meal, but avoid Sunday brunch!
-they somehow managed to make the horseradish sweet which made the beef even worse than initial preparation
-The place was messy
-sliced meats were low grade
Only positive was the sparkling wine was reasonably priced.
-Service was fine
Go to the taco place across the alley or even to the cafeteria and you will be much better off.
When they refilled our waters, it was warm!!
-coffee was on par with Denny’s
- ice cream was d and had large crystals of ice as if it were thawed and re-frozen
The omelet was the only thing that was actually good, but there was about a stick of butter and/or oil along with it. I literally had to tilt my plate to attempt to drain it.
- many items were just cheap knockoff products that they appeared to just buy frozen and quick cook
The coffee was garbage.
Frankly, pretty amazed at how far down this place has gone. I hope their day-to-day is not this ghastly.
-Prime rib / roast beast was tasteless, bland and low quality
- Mini quiche was forgettable
- salads were acceptable but not worth the premium
The crab cakes were so foul; actually almost all of the food was truly awful.
-apple pie was average
Amazingly bad brunch. If it weren’t for the decent omelette, I would have gone hungry.
- Weird chicken broccoli thing was tasteless paste of an experience
The atmosphere is excellent! I was a bit disappointed with my entree; however, my colleagues all were pleased with their meal. I ordered one of the feature items. I could not believe a chef or cook would have allowed a plate to leave the kitchen with such an unappetizing appearance. The dish was not as described by the server. The restaurant was also out of several menu items. The desserts were mediocre at best and that was something our entire party had to agree with during our conversations. Our server was kind and efficient but I don’t think she understood how to truly make sure a guest was completely pleased with their meal.
They comped one of the meals, but I would never go back.
-Crabcakes were anything but
